Bluthner 4
Colour: Walnut
Year: 1932
The Bluthner Model 4 is a medium sized grand piano from the historic Leipzig manufacturer and sits within Bluthner’s long established range of traditional grands. Designed to balance tonal richness with a relatively compact footprint, the Model 4 has been widely used in private homes, teaching studios and smaller performance spaces.
As with other Bluthner grand pianos of this period, the Model 4 is built around a solid spruce soundboard and a robust rim construction, contributing to its characteristic warm, rounded tone. Many examples feature Bluthner’s patented Aliquot stringing system in the treble, a design intended to enhance sustain and harmonic colour while retaining clarity and transparency. The action is responsive and capable of a wide dynamic range, allowing for both expressive pianissimo playing and confident projection.
The Model 4 reflects Bluthner’s traditional approach to piano making, combining craftsmanship with a distinctive tonal identity that differs from brighter modern designs. Well preserved instruments are valued for their musical depth and refined character, making them a respected choice for pianists seeking a classic German grand piano sound.
