How does a silent piano work?

A lever stops the hammers a fraction before they strike the strings, while optical sensors read every key and pedal movement and recreate the sound digitally in your headphones. Disengage the lever and it is a normal acoustic piano again, completely unaffected.

Is a silent piano better than a digital piano?

Can a silent system be fitted to a piano I already own?
