Who we are

The Piano Gallery is an independent, family-run piano specialist based in the historic market town of Faringdon, Oxfordshire. The business was founded by Steve in Swindon in 1980 and moved to our current showroom in Faringdon in the 1990s. Claire joined in 2002, and together they have built one of the most respected independent piano businesses in the UK.

Over more than four decades, our reputation has been built on a single principle: finding the right piano for each person, not selling the most expensive one we have in stock. We do not use sales tactics. We listen, we ask questions, and we help you find an instrument you will love for years to come.

We don't sell pianos at The Piano Gallery. We help people find exactly what they're looking for.

Unlike large chain music retailers, pianos are all we do. That focus means deep, genuine expertise in every corner of the acoustic piano market, from assessing the condition of a 1930s Bechstein grand to advising a parent on the right first instrument for a child just beginning lessons. We have served customers from across Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, the Cotswolds and beyond, as well as from London, Bristol, Birmingham and further afield, because word spreads when a business does things properly. You can read some of their letters on our testimonials page.

The showroom

Our showroom houses over 100 pianos at any one time, all available to play and compare alongside each other: grand pianos, upright pianos and silent pianos, covering every ability, budget and style. We encourage you to sit down and play as many instruments as you like, at your own pace, with no pressure whatsoever. There is, of course, always a cup of tea available.

Our stock includes brand new Yamaha acoustic and digital pianos (we are authorised Yamaha dealers), nearly new and pre-owned Yamaha uprights and grands, quality pre-owned European instruments by Steinway, Bechstein, Bluthner, Kawai, Bosendorfer and Schimmel, restored Victorian and Edwardian pianos reconditioned in local Oxfordshire workshops, and silent and hybrid piano systems. Prices start from around £1,000.

We offer hire to buy rental schemes, flexible payment plans and interest free finance through the Arts Council England Take it Away scheme on pianos up to £5,000. There is more on our piano finance page, and we will always help you find a route to ownership that works for your situation.

How we work

  • No pressure, ever. A cup of tea, a relaxed browse and honest advice is what we offer.
  • Honest assessments. We will tell you candidly what a piano is worth, what its strengths and limitations are, and whether it is right for your needs. We would rather lose a sale than mislead a customer.
  • Expert knowledge. With over 40 years in the acoustic piano market, we know how to assess an instrument properly. When we describe a piano as excellent, we mean it.
  • Fair prices. We are not the cheapest, because the cheapest is rarely the best, but we will always offer genuine value for money.
  • Local restoration. Our reconditioning and restoration work is carried out in local Oxfordshire workshops by skilled craftspeople, never sent abroad for cheap repairs.
  • Nationwide delivery. We deliver across the UK with experienced piano movers, and a free first tuning is included with every purchase.
  • We buy pianos too. If you are looking to sell, we offer outright purchase or commission sale, particularly for Yamaha, Steinway, Bechstein, Kawai, Bluthner and Bosendorfer. See selling your piano.
