Buying a piano

We stock over 120 pianos in our Faringdon showroom at any one time, making us one of the largest piano showrooms in the UK. Our range includes brand-new uprights and grands, nearly new and pre-owned instruments, silent pianos, traditional restored Victorian and Edwardian pianos, and digital pianos — covering every ability and budget. Prices start from £1,000.
Yes. We are an authorised Yamaha dealer and stock a range of brand-new upright and grand pianos from leading manufacturers. Every new piano purchase from The Piano Gallery includes:
  • Free mainland UK delivery (ground floor)
  • Free matching piano stool
  • Free first tuning once the piano has settled
  • Finance options available
Yes — pre-owned pianos make up a significant part of our stock. We carry quality used instruments across all price ranges, including nearly new Yamaha uprights and grands (many under 30 years old), restored traditional Victorian and Edwardian pianos, and quality European and Japanese instruments by makers such as Bechstein, Blüthner, and Kawai. Every pre-owned piano is assessed by our experienced team before it goes on sale. We will never sell a piano we wouldn't be happy to have in our own home.
Our stock includes instruments by many of the world's most respected manufacturers, including Yamaha, Steinway, Bechstein, Blüthner, Kawai, Kemble, and Bösendorfer. As an authorised Yamaha dealer, we carry both new and pre-owned Yamaha acoustic and digital pianos. We also regularly stock a range of quality traditional and vintage makes. Call us on 01367 244554 to find out what is currently available.
Prices start from £1,000 for a quality pre-owned upright piano. We stock instruments to suit every budget, from affordable starter pianos for beginners right through to concert-quality grand pianos. Finance options are available on pianos up to £5,000, which can make owning a quality instrument more accessible than you might expect. Our team will always give you honest advice about what represents good value at every price point — we will never try to oversell.
Absolutely — and we actively encourage it. Our Faringdon showroom is set up for you to sit down and play as many pianos as you like, at your own pace, with no pressure whatsoever. We believe that finding the right piano is a personal journey, and comparison is key. With over 120 instruments on display, you will quickly start to hear and feel the differences between makes, models, ages, and styles. We will guide you through our range, or simply leave you to explore freely — whichever you prefer. We also make a very good cup of tea.
This is one of the questions we get asked most often, and the honest answer is: it depends. The most important thing is to buy an instrument that inspires the learner to play. We always recommend visiting the showroom and trying a range of pianos at different price points before deciding. That said, a quality pre-owned upright piano from a reputable maker such as Yamaha or Kawai is often an excellent starting point — combining good playability and tone with great value for money. We will always listen to your needs and budget before making a recommendation. Call 01367 244554 or drop in Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.

Finance & payment

Yes. We offer interest-free finance through the Arts Council England Take it Away scheme, available on pianos up to £5,000. We also offer our own monthly payment plans subject to status. Contact us on 01367 244554 to discuss your options.
Take it Away is an Arts Council England initiative that provides interest-free loans of up to £5,000 to make musical instruments more accessible. The scheme is available to UK residents who meet the following criteria:
  • Aged 18–25 (applying in their own right), or
  • Over 18 and buying an instrument for a child under 18
  • A permanent UK resident with a regular income exceeding £5,000 per year
  • Holds a bank or building society account capable of handling direct debits
Repayments are spread over 9 months (for loans of £100–£2,000) or 18 months (for loans of £800–£5,000) with no administration fees. You will never pay more than the ticket price.

Example: Piano costing £1,995

Deposit: £200  ·  Balance: £1,795  ·  Monthly repayment: £99.72 over 18 months

Example: Piano costing £4,000

Deposit: £400  ·  Balance: £3,600  ·  Monthly repayment: £200.00 over 18 months

The Piano Gallery is a licensed credit broker for Take it Away loans. Subject to status. For full details visit takeitaway.org.uk or call us on 01367 244554.
If the piano you wish to purchase costs more than £5,000, you can still use the Take it Away scheme as a part-payment. You would borrow the maximum £5,000 interest-free and pay the remaining balance by another method (debit card, credit card, or cash). For example:

Piano costing £7,500

Deposit: £2,500  ·  Take it Away loan: £5,000  ·  Monthly repayment: £277.77 over 18 months

For pianos outside the Take it Away scheme, please speak to us about our own payment plan options. Call 01367 244554 for more information.

Delivery & moving

Yes — we offer free mainland UK delivery on all pianos over £1,000, to ground floor as standard. We deliver anywhere on the mainland, and have previously delivered pianos to customers from Cornwall to Aberdeen, and everywhere in between — including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. Stair work and upper floor delivery is available at an additional charge. Please call us on 01367 244554 to discuss delivery to your address.
Yes, we offer piano removal and moving services as a standalone service, not just in connection with a purchase. Pianos are specialist items that require careful, experienced handling — particularly grand pianos, which must be dismantled and reassembled correctly. Please call us on 01367 244554 to discuss your requirements and receive a quote.
We handle all the preparation as part of our moving service — you don't need to do anything to the piano itself. It is worth measuring doorways, hallways, and stairwells in advance so we can assess access requirements. For grand pianos in particular, please let us know the size of the instrument and the layout of the rooms involved. Call us on 01367 244554 to discuss the specifics of your move.
Yes — moving a piano almost always affects its tuning. Changes in temperature and humidity as the instrument moves between environments can cause the strings and wooden components to shift. We recommend waiting approximately 6 to 8 weeks after the move before tuning, to allow the piano to fully settle and acclimatise to its new surroundings. We offer a professional tuning service — call 01367 244554 to book.

Piano tuning

Yes. The Piano Gallery offers professional piano tuning services carried out by experienced specialists. We cover Faringdon, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Gloucestershire, and surrounding areas. A complimentary first tuning is included with every piano purchased from us. Call 01367 244554 to book a tuning.
Most pianos should be tuned at least once or twice a year. Pianos that are played frequently, used in a school or teaching environment, or that have recently been moved or installed in a new home may need tuning more often. If a piano has been left untuned for a long period, it may require a pitch raise before a standard tuning can be carried out. We recommend booking a tuning approximately 6 to 8 weeks after delivery, once the piano has had time to settle and acclimatise.
Pianos go out of tune primarily due to changes in temperature and humidity, which cause the wooden components, soundboard, and strings to expand and contract over time. Central heating in winter and humidity in summer are common causes. Moving the piano can also disturb its tuning significantly. This is entirely normal and does not indicate a problem with the instrument — it simply means the piano needs regular care. Even a piano that is rarely played will go out of tune over time.

Repairs & restoration

Yes — restoring traditional Victorian and Edwardian pianos is one of our specialities. We regularly carry out full restorations that bring older instruments back to fully playable, musically rewarding condition. We will always give you an honest assessment of whether a piano is worth restoring or whether a replacement would better serve your needs. We will never recommend unnecessary work. Call 01367 244554 to discuss your piano.
Yes. We offer independent piano valuations for insurance purposes, probate, sale, or general peace of mind. With over 40 years of specialist experience in the UK piano market, we are well placed to give you an accurate and honest assessment of your instrument's current market value. Call 01367 244554 or email sales@thepianogallery.co.uk to arrange a valuation.

Piano rental & hire

Yes. We offer flexible hire-to-buy rental plans that allow you to have a quality piano in your home straight away, with the option to put payments toward a purchase if you decide to buy. Rental is ideal for:
  • Children who have just started lessons
  • Adults returning to playing after a break
  • Anyone who wants to try a piano at home before committing to a purchase
  • Short-term requirements such as events or performances

Selling your piano

Yes — we operate a part-exchange and trade-in scheme. If you own a piano and are looking to upgrade, downsize, or simply change instrument, we will assess your current piano and, where suitable, offer a trade-in value to set against your next purchase from us. We stock over 120 pianos across all price ranges, so there is almost always something to move to next. Contact us on 01367 244554 or visit our showroom to discuss.
Yes, we may be interested in buying quality pianos outright, and we can also offer a commission sale as an alternative. We are particularly interested in instruments by Yamaha, Kawai, Kemble, Steinway, Bechstein, Blüthner, and Bösendorfer. To start the process, please submit details and a couple of photographs of your piano via our sell your piano page, or call us on 01367 244554.
