Our money back upgrade option… and why people tend to like it more than they expect
It’s one of those things that sounds quite simple when you first hear it. You buy a piano from us, and if at any point in the future you want to upgrade, we give you back what you paid (less the VAT) against another piano.
On the surface, it’s straightforward. But in practice, it changes quite a lot about how people approach the whole decision.
Because if you’re honest, a big part of buying a piano isn’t just choosing one. It’s the worry that sits alongside it. The sense that you might get it wrong, or that you’ll realise later you should have chosen differently.
It’s not a small thing to have in your home. It’s not something you casually replace. And it’s not always obvious at the beginning what’s going to feel right in the long term.
You might be buying for a child who’s just starting out, and you don’t yet know how far they’ll go with it. You might be coming back to playing yourself and feel a bit unsure what suits you now. Or you might have narrowed things down but still have that quiet doubt in the back of your mind, wondering if this is quite the right one.
That’s the part people don’t always say out loud, but it’s nearly always there.
What the upgrade option does is take some of that pressure away. It means you don’t have to feel like everything hinges on getting the decision exactly right first time.
You can choose something that feels right now, knowing that if your situation changes, or your preferences shift, or you simply learn more about what you like, you’re not stuck with that original choice. You haven’t lost that initial investment.
It turns what can feel like a very fixed decision into something a bit more flexible. And that alone tends to make people feel more comfortable.
Interestingly, it also changes how people choose in the first place. Instead of trying to second guess the future, or stretching their budget just to “cover all bases”, people can focus more on what actually suits them now.
What fits their space. What feels right to play. What they naturally enjoy sitting down to.
And that usually leads to better decisions, because they’re based on how the piano feels, rather than a fear of getting it wrong.
Over time, quite a few people do come back and upgrade. Sometimes because a child has progressed further than expected. Sometimes because they’ve developed a clearer idea of what they like. And sometimes simply because they’re ready for something different.
When they do, it tends to feel like a natural next step rather than starting again from scratch.
Even for people who never use the option, there’s something reassuring about knowing it’s there. It takes away that sense that the decision has to be perfect, which can make the whole process feel quite heavy.
Instead, it becomes more about finding something you genuinely enjoy having in your home, with the understanding that you’ve got options later if you need them.
And that’s really the point of it. Not to encourage constant changing, but to make the initial decision feel easier, calmer, and a bit more forgiving.
If you’re at the stage of looking and feeling slightly unsure, that’s completely normal. Most people are.
Sometimes just knowing you don’t have to get everything exactly right straight away makes the whole thing feel far more manageable.
And if you’d like to talk it through, or understand how it works in a bit more detail, you’re always very welcome to get in touch. We’re happy to explain it properly and help you decide if it feels like the right approach for you.
