Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Yamaha b1 good for a beginner?
Yes. The Yamaha b1 is one of the most popular beginner pianos available. It offers Yamaha's reliable action and consistent tone in a compact, space-efficient format. As a genuine acoustic piano it develops correct touch and technique from the start. Most beginners will progress comfortably through their early grades on a Yamaha b1 without feeling any limitation from the instrument.
Is a 2014 Yamaha b1 a good used buy?
Yes. A 2014 Yamaha is a very recent instrument with the vast majority of its playing life still ahead of it. This example is essentially a modern piano, built to Yamaha's current production standards, and will perform just as it would have on the day it left the factory after proper preparation. It is a more modern buy than many used pianos and offers strong reliability and resale value as a result.
How does the Yamaha b1 compare to a Kawai or Kemble compact upright?
A Yamaha b1 offers Japanese precision, a bright and even tone, and Yamaha's globally recognised manufacturing reputation. A Kawai compact upright of similar size will offer a slightly warmer, mellower tone with Kawai's excellent action quality. A Kemble has a warmer, more British character. All are capable compact uprights at a similar price level. We stock options from all three brands and are very happy to let you compare them in person.
How does a 109cm b1 compare to a full-sized Yamaha upright?
The main difference is height and therefore sound. A full-sized Yamaha U1 (121cm) or U3 (131cm) has longer strings and a bigger soundboard, producing noticeably more volume, depth, and dynamic range. The b1 is lighter and more focused in tone, excellent for home practice and beginners, but more limited for advanced players who want maximum expression. We stock both and are happy to let you compare them.
How long will a Yamaha b1 last?
A well-maintained Yamaha upright should last 40 to 60 years. A 2014 b1 is a modern instrument with decades of service ahead. With twice-yearly tuning, correct placement, and periodic regulation, it will continue to perform reliably for a very long time.
