This Yamaha upright piano is a compact mahogany polyester instrument — a practical, well-built Japanese acoustic piano offering Yamaha's signature reliability and tonal clarity in a space-conscious format. It is ideally suited to beginners, home players, and smaller rooms where a full-sized upright may not be practical.

Yamaha compact uprights are consistently well regarded for their even action, stable tuning, and characteristic clear tone. This example has been assessed and prepared by our team at The Piano Gallery and is available to try in our Oxfordshire showroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a compact Yamaha upright good for a beginner?

Yes — compact Yamaha uprights are among the most popular beginner pianos available. They offer Yamaha's reliable, well-regulated action and consistent tone in a smaller, more affordable format. Being a genuine acoustic piano, they also build correct touch and technique in a way that a digital instrument can't fully replicate. Most beginners will play happily on a compact Yamaha right through their early grades.

How does a compact Yamaha compare to a full-sized upright like the U1?

The main difference is height — and therefore string length and soundboard size. A compact Yamaha at around 108–110cm produces a lighter, more focused sound, while a full-sized U1 (121cm) or U3 (131cm) offers noticeably more volume, depth and dynamic range. For home practice and beginners, a compact model is perfectly appropriate. Players who progress seriously will often find a taller instrument more rewarding as their playing develops.

Should I buy a compact Yamaha or save up for a U1?

It depends on your situation. If space is genuinely tight or budget is the primary concern, a compact Yamaha is an excellent starting point — many players own them for years and never feel the need to upgrade. If you have the budget and space for a U1, the step up in sound and feel is noticeable and worth it for a committed player. We stock both and are always happy to let you compare them side by side in our showroom.

Is a used Yamaha as reliable as a new one?

Yamaha uprights are exceptionally well built and hold up very well over time. A used Yamaha that has been properly checked and serviced by a qualified technician — as all our pianos are — is a very reliable instrument. We are also authorised Yamaha dealers and can offer new Yamaha uprights if you'd prefer the reassurance of a full manufacturer's warranty.

How long will a Yamaha compact upright last?

With regular tuning and sensible care, a Yamaha upright should last 40–60 years. Yamaha pianos from the 1970s and 80s are still widely in use today. Regular tuning (twice yearly), keeping the piano away from direct heat sources and damp, and occasional regulation are all that's needed to keep it performing well for decades.
